Fortnite: 5 Beginner Tips to Get You Through!

So, we're kicking it lockdown style with 2 blog posts in 2 week's ya'll! But I'd be giving myself too much credit. So, this week's post has courteously guest written by my longtime bloghubs/Instagram husband, Avi.

So Lockdown activity 1; if you're looking for a game to take over your life, your time and partially within reason, your bank account (JK). Look no further than Fortnite!

Here are 5 quick, easy tips for beginners looking to spend the 17 days socialising without the hassle of social distancing and interacting with people from all over the world! If there's one thing other than Coronavirus that has the power to bring the world together, it's Fortnite!

Fortnite, the online video game that took the world by storm. From teaming up with friends, travelling across the map via boats or helicopters, it truly has evolved with many graphic updates and mechanics.

The new Chapter 2 Season 2 kicked off with a secret agent themed Battle Pass. What is a Battle Pass, one may ask?

At the beginning of each season, a new Battle Pass is launched, purchasing this would require around 350 ZAR and gives you the season's new skins as well as cosmetics together with 25 levels to kick start your game play. There are 100 levels and by playing and completing weekly challenges, you can reach level 100 and unlock the Midas skin (seen in Centre of the image above[Gold dude]).  Levelling up also gives you V bucks, the games currency, this can be used to purchase emotes, skins and cosmetics in the item shop or purchasing levels to get ahead of your friends!

There are many experienced players out there, and you may be familiar with the term "OG" players who can build super fast or take on an entire squad all by themselves; these players have upped their skill over seasons and keep getting better! So what should I do if I encounter such a player? One may ask, especially if you're a beginner. Well, fear not because Fortnite has implemented something called Skill Based Match Making. The game will detect your level, game play and insert players who are beginners as well as "Bots" or NPC's (Not player characters). Of course as you level up and get better, you will face more experienced players!

The game is successful due to its building mechanics and the key to winning any game in Fortnite is building. Getting better at the game requires patience and tons of learning. So, whether you're on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, Mobile or Nintendo Switch, here are some basic tips to help you become a better player:

1 : Safe landing.
Landing at popular drops or locations near the bus could result in a lot of other players landing there too, this would mean that you have less time to find a weapon and could potentially lead to a quick death. Point of interest (POI's) like The Agency, The Yacht, The Grotto and The Rig are always busy thanks to having better weapons and loot. Try avoiding these places if you're a beginner.

2. Weapons and Healing items.

Remember, you have a limited to time loot; before the storm closes in, so try to search for weapons and healing items as soon as you land. The best inventory should include:

  • An Assault Rifle (for range).
  • A shotgun, for close combat and
  • An SMG, for rapid fire or to destroy the enemies building.
  • Grenades and rocket launchers are always great for destroying enemies as well, but be careful not to blow yourself up in the process

You should always carry Mini Shield potions at all times, which grant you 50% shield per bottle and fish around for floppers which grant you 50%health. These can be very useful when getting shot at.

Weapons and shields can be found on the ground or chests which are in buildings and trucks. Since the dawn of chapter 2, chests now have a 100% spawn rate and will always be in the exact same place each time you land. EPIC chests have also been added which grant you better weapons and shield potions; they have a distinct sound but not a 100% spawn rate.

3. Materials and building.

Now that landing and weapons are covered, the main key to winning any game in Fortnite is building! This protects your character from enemy fire as well as obtaining height for maximum advantage over the enemy.
All players are equipped with a pick axe, this is default and switching to it during game play, allows you to break down trees, stones, buildings and vehicles to gather materials.
Remember, the more materials you have, the greater the chance of you out playing your enemy.
Materials get allocated to either, wood, brick or metal depending on what you break down with your pick axe. Whenever you encounter enemy fire, always build around yourself or your squad and gain height to view the enemy location and fire back.
Building will protect you from third party fire as well. Make certain you cover your sides, your back and build a solid base. Each time you build, it will utilise your materials that you have gathered so make certain you have enough.
Upon eliminating opponents, you can loot their weapons and materials to replenish yours. Improving on building and editing will result in many victories, so the faster you learn, the better for you and your squad.

4. Always have a strategy.

All games require strategy apart from skill, in actual fact, a strategic player may outsmart a pro player and take the win.
Always have a plan of action:

  • Move together if you're playing squads and never run off on your own.
  • Using helicopters and boats will only draw attention to your location and this will result in a quicker death to you and your mates.
  • Make certain you carry a launchpad in your inventory, these are found as floor loot or in supply drops and can make travelling and escaping the storm much more faster and silent.
  • Swimming can also be used, however, make certain the current is flowing towards the direction you're travelling and not against it.
  • Use explosives to destroy enemy buildings and always build up to gain height advantage.
  • If you do not have enough materials to gain height or you're still getting the hang of building, look out for hill tops that may be in zone and grant you a height advantage, this will make it difficult for the enemy to attack as they would need to build up to reach you and defend against your attack.
  • You can also practice building in creative maps with your friends. Learning edits could also be an added advantage.

5. Never stand still

When moving around on the map, always develop a habit of jumping and running, together with looking all around you, remember it's a Battle Royale game so enemies will be everywhere.
When you're stopping to drink a shield potion, open a chest or heal a teammate, always build around yourself to protect against enemy fire.
NEVER consume shields or apply med kits out in the open. This will result in being spotted by the enemy, getting shot at or worse, a sniper taking you out with a head shot.
Never let your guard down and always be vigilant of enemies and their location by either looking out for opened doors on buildings, damaged buildings or just normal gunfire that can be hear during game play.
Enemies footsteps are different as well and are much louder than your teammates. Communication is key, never wander off alone or abandon your teammates. Always make them aware if you're going to snatch a supply drop or if you've been hit and you're healing up.

Overall, remember to always enjoy the game and never compare yourself to other players or teammates. Never look down on yourself but rather practice every day on building and strategy if you want to get great at the game. Key points are communication and building in Fortnite. It's pointless having great weapons but no protection. You won't win every game, as variables such a location, zones and enemies play a huge factor, so never give up, practice and put your skills to the test and keep playing if you want to get better at the game.

Don't be a sore loser, keep landing and having fun. It doesn't matter what platform you play on, play the game to enjoy it. No console or PC is superior, don't listen to haters.

Follow these basic steps and you'll be advancing in the game real fast. Be certain to watch educational channels on YouTube like SypherPK for tutorials on building and editing. Follow the famous Ninja and Tfue to learn new strategies and game play or enjoy watching pro players like Nate Hill and Faze_Replays destroy squads.

Fortnite is going to be around for a long time, so level up, get better and who knows, I might just see you at the next Fortnite World Cup
