Chick Flicks

Hi there blog readers!

Here's a little different post for you today; my chick flick movie guide for your annual slumber party or chilled night with your girlfriends or just by your onesie.
My love for chick flicks have grown over the years, from classic much loved Elle Woods to sultry and a little more adult Carrie Bradshaw, this list should carry you from your teens through your twenties and still be much loved movies to pass onto your daughters as the years go by. Guy candy included.

So go on and pop yourself some popcorn and read through some of the old favourites before deciding what to rent through box office rentals!

Legally Blonde 1 & 2:

There's no surprise that Elle Woods in Legally Blonde is at the top of my list. Beauty and as we so fondly found out; brain can be contained in one single blonde bombshell package that is Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde as she taught young women that nothing is impossible; even getting into law school albeit with wrong intention, you can do whatever you put your mind to in pink heels or not. Legally Blonde boasts one of the best feminist story-lines with a little "happy ever after" putting things in place for the best kind of chick flick. Catch this one with your girls or by yourself if you need some feminism in your life!

2. Mean Girls

Rivaled for first place with Legally Blonde, Mean Girls ties in closely at 2nd place for Queen of chick flicks. Setting the stage for high school vibes Lindsey Lohan plays "jungle freak turned newbie school Queen". The quotes are livable, the cast is forever memorable and Mean Girls will leave you nostalgic with your own high school memories or give you some to look forward too, and also, on Wednesdays we wear pink!

3. The Devil Wears Prada

The first of a few features of the lovely Anne Hathaway; The Devil wears Prada will create a new found love of fashion and Meryl Streep in all her glory as she proves truly that the devil does indeed wear Prada. Join Andie as she navigates her way through New York fashion when she lands the job that " a million girls would kill for" and learns the ins and outs of her new lifestyle while sacrificing things she never thought she would. Life lessons abound this chick flick sees Anne Hathaway fall away from her famous Princess Diaries role and into the more chic fun loving gal we've grown to love over the years.

4. The Intern
Yes this one is slightly a bit more on the comedic, drama side but I've found that the Intern is a movie that is a little slow paced and relaxed while providing a girl with insight and color. Shot in Brooklyn, the movie followers a widower who lands a job as an intern for Anne Hathaway's (yes she's here again) character; Jules Ostin who owns an e-commerce business selling clothes online. The intern poses a few questions and surprising insights to normal life issues while following around the characters. Robert De Niro

5. Easy A
Easy A is unfortunately a seriously underrated movie provides a range of laughs, lies and entertaining high school comdey for the average chick flick viewer. Olive Penterghast aka Emma Stone showcases her brilliant, newfound (to us viewers) acting skills as a high school student navigating her way through books, boys and brilliantly put teenage drama. Without spoiling too much for those that haven't caught this. Emma Stone's character Olive in all her witty glory tells a little white lie that is blown out of proportion and is judged quite harshly on it once the little rumor is spread out around her school; she then takes to broadcasting her truths to the school in good old fashion sarcastic wit.

6. Bridget Jone's Diary

I recently went through a marathon of re-watching all the Bridget Jone's Diary movies and it reminded me that as a young 20 something girl living in a city, nothing gets easier as you get older, Single or not, Bridget Jones embodies at least one to two qualities that every girl/woman between 20 and 40 can relate to. The sequel Edge of Reason and third installment Bridget Jone's Baby are serious must watches if you like myself and many other women fall in love with Renee's quirks and brilliant portrayal as a 30 something single British woman trying to find her place at work and a man to share her lonely days with then a Bridget Jone's Marathon is a must!

7. Sex and The City
Some may argue that Sex and the City: The Movie is the ultimate must watch on a girl's night in and rightly so if you managed to catch the series on TV. In a modern day take, Carrie and gang would be hooking up via Tinder and ghosting guys that they no longer fancied but for the rest of us who are good old faithful understand that there's nothing better than catching these 4 on TV sipping on Cosmos, streamlining through an array of problems from men to makeup. When we heard that a movie was in the works we couldn't wait till it was on DVD to rewatch at our girl's night ins; a movie being a little better than binge watching episodes through the night.

8. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

A very classic chick flick with a little twist at the end, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days features brilliant comedy and "awh" moments between Mathew McConaughey and Kate Hudson in which respective characters are entangled in specific bets concerning the other, ending hilarious yet sweet actions as we watch these two navigate a relationship that is bound against each other from the beginning. Watch this for light-hearted comedy and a bit of a cry fest with a warm ending that makes you believe in happy endings again!

9. No Strings Attached
No Strings Attached; a chick flick mega comedy starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher exploring the world of friends with benefits, but in classic girl-boy natural habitats, one finds themselves feeling a little differently towards the other. Any guesses who falls first?
Watch this simply for the sweet things Kutcher does and the simplistic strong nature that Portman exudes and it'll change your perspective on the average boy-girl relationships that friends share.
Great viewing for early evening at a girls night in; definitely a movie for before the wine comes out.

10. Confessions of a Shopaholic
Isla Fisher, before her Keeping up with the Jonses days keeps us entertained with her shopping antics around New York with her 4 credit cards and passion for fashion; we find a new love story blooming with the purchase of a green scarf.
Taking notes of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, we see Fisher putting brain forward while still maintaining a brilliant eye and passion for shoes and handbags.
A brilliant watch to start of a light-hearted girls night in.

11. Princess Diaries 1 & 2

Yet another one of Anne Hathaway's brilliant flicks makes the list. There couldn't be a better choice for a girl's night in and watching the transformation of Mia Thermapolis to Princess of Genovia. Almost every girl dreams of becoming a princess and that's precisely what's to follow in the Princess Diaries movie's 1 and 2. Without spoiling much, the movies focus on Mia's journey to becoming princess and maintaining her status following her coronation in the second movie. If you're a follower of the novels written by Meg Cabot then these are the flicks to catch at your next girl's nights in.

12. P.S I Love you
Get your tissues out girls because this one is a roller-coast of cries, laughs and the occasional relatable moment can be caught on P.S I Love You. Following the unexpected passing of her husband, Holly finds herself surrounded by memories of her dearly departed as well as a strange letter from him. I'll leave it at that because apart from great dialogue and breathtaking scenery P.S I Love you takes the viewer on a journey of grief and melancholy misfortune accompanied with the blossoming of new beginnings and the occasional laugh in between. Definitely a watch with some older girlfriends and I can guarantee that there will not be a dry eye in the house.

13 10 Things I Hate About You
A very classic take on high school life and romance from a modern day Shakespeare outlook. 10 thing I hate about you is like no other; the tempestuous Julia Stiles is ruthless and feministic-ly (I'm pretty sure that's not a word, but what the hell right?) and is brilliant from start to finish as we see the classic type of chick flick love unfold between her and the late sob! Heath Ledger in the most uncharacteristic way possible.

14. The Vow
Unfortunately I hesitated popping this romance onto my list as it isn't quite the classic romcom one would pick for a lightheated girls night rather a "cry your heart out" all alone kind of movie. Based on a brutally cruel, test of fate true story. we follow the journey of the blooming newlywed Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams love story as it revolves around the loss of memory and falling in love again. This one's a tear jerker guys; keep them tissues ready!

The Holiday:
Set a reminder on your smartphone ladies, because this is a movie you want to really enjoy during the festive season and if you've watched if before you'll agree that it never gets old over Christmas and New Year. Man trouble leads to Iris and Amanda switching homes over the holiday which brings in some unexpected things over their 2 week holiday; proving that a woman with a glass of wine and a laptop can bring about any kind of change in her life as she wishes. Predictable and funny, this movie will have you forgetting any holiday woe. Definitely one to catch by yourself over a tub of ice cream or with your girls for some light-hearted fun entertainment.

Eat Pray Love
The ultimate feel good story; I could watch Julia Roberts in this adventure filled "find yourself" story of discovery literally at any time. Julia ventures out on a life changing journey that will alter her lifetime and allow her to realise and focus on things that she never thought important. Eat, Pray, Love finds her snacking in Italy, worshiping in India and finding herself some good lovin' in Bali. The breathtaking scenery leaves you wanting more as she travels through every city. If only we could "holiday" to find our centers again?

Special mentions:
Titanic, The perfect Man, The Time traveler's wife, John Tucker Must Die, Twilight movies/50 Shades, 50 First Dates, What a Girl Wants, Juno, Bridewars,

If I haven't mentioned any of the "the favourites" then I probably haven't gotten round to watching it yet. Drop your favourites in the comments!
